How could you not see this typo?

January 29th, 2009 | 13 Comments | Posted in Idei genitale, advertising, print

This is a very nasty looking typo. I can’t imagine how BRD accepted this print and how they decided to show it everywhere in different formats. And maybe I should mention this is not local but it has been distributed to all BRD agencies across the country. That capital W is very nasty and it’s visible from a great distance. You might wonder who is guilty for this error. I challange you to do something else. How would you react as the boss of the guy or girl who was in charge with this job?
I would make him study the impact of this error on consumers’ perception and if and how would that change their pov regarding BRD image. After that I would let him choose his punsihment. :p

I’m very new to this blog, I don’t know much about marketing. My background is technical, and that’s probably why I honestly don’t get this.

My first thought was that it doesn’t even *really* qualify as a typo. If anything, it makes the link more visible and to me, that’s a good thing.

Reclama gratis !!! Way To Go Mono ! :D

First of all, the error may lead to the impression that the website is not the official site of BRD, but a phishing one. The reputation of a bank that encounters such problems is terribly endangered, especially in such times of economic commotion.

If I were the employer, I would probably ditch the dude who did this :D . There are many standing in line for his position. Seriously now, the employee should repent for his error, it’s not something unimportant, considering the general mistrust in banks and the fear for phishing scams.

I’m sorry to conflict with you in any way, but

http://Www.site.com is not really a big mistake.

    Is

daniel oanta – written without any capitals – a mistake?

    Not according to some designers.

OK, it’s a bank, rigid, bla-bla, but in the end they decide if it written with a capital letter or not.

I don’t view it as an error, and in any case not a HUGE error. :)

  7. Adrian Monoranu Says:

@Firem web design: It’s not a HUGE error but it is an error. I don’t think they used this intentionally.

  8. Adrian Monoranu Says:

@Denisa: I don’t think a customer should think that far as to confront this poster with a fishing tentative because these prints are posted inside the bank agencies.

  9. Adrian Monoranu Says:

@ana: now that’s a good point! didn’t think of it this way. technical minds are clearer then creative ones’.

  10. Adrian Monoranu Says:

@mario: read the about section. this blog is not related whatsoever with my job. :)

  11. Denisa Says:

@Mono: Oh, sorry, my bad then. I thought it was a capture from the website, I was in a hurry and I didn’t maximize the image.

From this perspective, it’s not a major problem, only that consistency (such as the use of the same typographic conventions) is seen as more professional, no matter the industry.

  12. Mishu Says:

    Dear Mono,
As some already mentioned, this is not a typo, it is an automation error caused by the text editors (which automatically capitalize the first letter from a sentence). I am sure that you often encountered this problem when Word automatically capitalizes a word, even if you don’t need to. Well this is software, they don’t think but we are supposed to do this job instead.
My opinion is that this happened due to the way people work in this field. Everybody wants to have the job done yesterday and the managers are putting pressure on the people and they set up unrealistic targets and deadlines so the details are often overpassed and the job it’s never 100% done.
On the other hand you are missing a very important point (I could even say THE MOST IMPORTANT). In marketing it’s not the specialists opinion that counts but the consumer’s! So does really the target person care about it? I’d say they don’t give a flying duck.
PS: probably you won’t agree with my last sentence but then I would ask you solid argument and I am not accepting anything below a market research :P
    Cheers

  13. Adrian Monoranu Says:

@Mishu: Of course I’ve encoutered this problem my self but as you probably know there is a solution for that even in Word and I doubt that there isn’t in other text editors. This is not an excuse for the guy who’s responsable. About the unrealistiv targets that managers set … maybe these targets wouldn’t so unrealistic if the employees would speak up but I guess most of the are to concerned about not loosing thier jobs. Anyway, I do not blame the guy/girl who wrote this, but the guy from marketing who accepted this print without checking it before. This is why there is a stage when somebody (from the marketing department maybe) has to agree on what we call “bun de tipar”.
About the opinion of the consumer … yeah it is important but if I, as a marketing specialist, don’t give a flying duck about what I give the consumer than I must be prepared for him not to give a flying duck about my products and my brand. So I think a market research is not really necessary as long as you agree on my last sentence! :)
